CARTAGENA, the ETSIT environment
Cartagena is located on the south east coast of Spain. With 200,000 inhabitants, it is the second-largest city in the Region of Murcia. It has a Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures and little rainfall in both summer and winter, which means its beautiful beaches can be enjoyed at almost any time of year.
Cartagena boasts a vast cultural and historical heritage. It was founded in the 10th century BC, and its history is reflected in its many museums, monuments, and tourist attractions: the Museum of Archaeology, the National Museum of Underwater Archaeology, the Punic Wall, the Museum of Modern Art, the Roman Theatre, and the City Hall are but a few examples. Cartagena, being a modern urban city, also offers a wide range of entertainment and leisure options such as cinema, theatre, art galleries, and internationally-renowned music festivals. Together with its university, the city of Cartagena is always open to change and innovation.
DEGREE COURSES OFFERED
The ETSIT (Telecommunications Engineering School) offers the following courses:
- Degree in Telecommunication Systems Engineering (240 ECTS credits)
- Degree in Telematics Engineering (240 ECTS credits)
- Master's Degree in Telecommunications Engineering (90 ECTS credits)
- Master's Research Degree in Information and Communication Technologies, awarded a Quality Mention by the Spanish Ministry of Education (60 ECTS credits).
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH TELECOMMUNICATIONS STUDIES
The telecommunications engineering profession is characterised by its ability to adapt to this increasingly technological and dynamic society. Today, telecommunications engineering is present not only in the Information and Communication Technologies sector, but also in many other sectors such as industrial, banking, motor, agricultural, health, consultancy, etc., which means a highly promising future for its professionals.
Graduates who have studied at the ETSIT of the UPCT (Polytechnic University of Cartagena) are adequately prepared to work in public or private, large or small service contract companies in the areas of design, installation, maintenance and operation of networks and cable and fibre optic communication systems (television, Internet, etc.) or wireless (mobile communications, WiFi, WiMAX, TDT, sensor networks, etc.). They also carry out an important function in service provision companies (mobile and cable operators) and companies dedicated to the manufacture and supply of equipment such as antennae, mobiles, digital television or radio, satellites, etc. Moreover, these engineers have a wide range of opportunity in Public Administration technical bodies and management consultancies, in entrepreneurship, R&D&I and in the independent practice of the profession.
STUDENTS AND GRADUATES
The ETSIT currently has over 700 students distributed among the various degree courses. The percentage of male and female students is 80% and 20% respectively.
Over its 10 years of existence, more than 600 students have graduated (321 in Telecommunications Engineering and 287 in Technical Telecommunications Engineering, specialising in Telematics). According to the PESIT VI report (Socio-Professional Studies on Telecommunications Engineers) of the Official College of Telecommunications Engineers, 100% of current telecommunications engineers and technical telecommunications engineers were employed within a year of completing their studies.
There are over 80 teachers in 10 different departments working at the ETSIT. Of these, 80% are Doctors. The employment status of available teaching staff reflects this situation, where 50% of the teaching and research staff are career civil servants, 19.5% have an indefinite employment contract, and 30.5% have a teaching or administrative contract. Some 65% of teaching staff have more than 10 years' teaching experience and over 70% have at least 6 years' recognised research work.
Along with teaching, research is one of the cornerstones of the University. The majority of ETSIT teachers carry out intense research activity. These teachers form part of different Research Groups related to telematics engineering, electromagnetism applied to telecommunications, signal processing, mobile communications, radio communications and astrophysics.
In just 10 years, 8 research groups have carried out 76 research projects, with funding of over 5.3 million euros; undertaken more than 50 R&D contracts worth over 1.5 million euros; published hundreds of articles and papers on national and international conferences; and have defended more than 40 Doctoral Theses in the field of ITCs with significant social impact.
The ETSIT headquarters are located in the restored 18th-century Antigones Building, which has a total surface area of 1,800 m2 dedicated exclusively to teaching classrooms, with a capacity for 1,305 students. Classroom equipment includes interactive digital blackboards, traditional blackboards, overhead projectors, a public address system (wireless microphones and speakers), multimedia desks, and Internet access. In addition to these, the School and its departments provide teachers with other audiovisual resources such as tablet PCs, slide projectors, a television/video, laptops, and video projectors.
Our facilities boast 1,500 m2 of teaching laboratories fitted out with state-of-the-art equipment, and 300 m2 dedicated to computer rooms. In addition to the teaching laboratories, 500 m2 of basement space is dedicated to R&D&I laboratories.
The exchange system between university centres aims to increase the diversity and extent of the higher education offer and enhance the opportunity for students to follow part of their study course in universities different to that they enrolled in. This system takes into account the educational value of the exchange, by enabling the student to experience different education systems. The ETSIT currently offers exchanges within the Erasmus programme in more than 20 European universities (Austria, Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Holland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom). Similarly, the SICUE programme (Exchange System between Spanish University Centres) in which the ETSIT also participates, offers students the possibility of an exchange in other Spanish universities.
